Las músicas de marimba y los cantos tradicionales del Pacífico Sur de Colombia forman parte del patrimonio cultural de los grupos afrocolombianos de los departamentos del Valle del Cauca, Cauca y Nariño. Este arte musical combina las canciones de mujeres (”cantadoras”) y hombres (”chureadores”) con el sonido de instrumentos acústicos fabricados artesanalmente con materiales locales: madera de palma para las marimbas; madera y cuero para los tambores de sonido grave tocados con las manos; y bambú y semillas para las maracas.

Las interpretaciones musicales tienen lugar con motivo de la celebración de cuatro ritos: el arrullo, el currulao, el chigualo y el alabao. El arrullo es un rito religioso de culto a los santos dirigido por mujeres que preparan las imágenes de los santos venerados, así como las velas y los altares, e interpretan cantos al son de tambores y, a veces, de marimbas.

Epidendrum bispatulathum es el nombre científico de esta nueva especie hallada por dos egresados de la UN en Palmira, en la Reserva Natural Bosque de Yotoco, propiedad de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Oscar Pérez y Edicson Parra, ingenieros agronómicos, desde el año 2006, y como proyecto de grado, adelantaban un detallado inventario de orquídeas de la Reserva de Yotoco, y luego de más de tres años de estudio, caracterización y clasificación, lograron establecer que de esta especie no había registro alguno hasta ahora.

Un ejemplar de esta nueva orquídea fue enviado al experto mexicano Eric Hagsater, quien confirmó que esta flor es la primera en su especie hallada en todo el mundo.

Knox Martin... was born in the Coolombiacool

1923  Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, South America.  Son of  William Knox Martin (aviator, painter, poet), the first man to fly over the Andes.
1946  - 1950  Studied at  The Art Students League of New York.
Taught at Yale Graduate School of the Arts, first as visiting critic in art, and then as Professor of Art.
Taught at New York University.  Named to "Who's Who in America."
Taught at the University of Minnesota.
Taught at the International School of Art in Umbria, Italy.
Presently gives master classes at the Art Students League of New York.
Knox Martin is the oldest son of Lieut. William Knox Martin, a Virginia-born early aviation pioneer and flyer, and his wife Isabel Vieco, who were married in the Canal Zone in Panama in 1921. After a career as an early test pilot, Knox Martin Sr. briefly became an artist and journalist in his wife's native country of Colombia, where he was well-known as the first man to fly over the Andes mountains. Martin Sr. returned to Virginia after several years and began flying again. Six years after his marriage Martin Sr. was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Watertown, New York. His widow Isabel relocated with her three young sons to New York City.
Knox Martin is best known for his repertory of signs and symbols that allude to nature and, in particular, to the female form. Flatly and freely painted in Pop colors, his works have often been executed on a grand scale, as in the outdoor wall painting, Woman with bicycle, at West Houston and MacDougal Streets in Manhattan. He mostly creates painting, sculpture and wall paintings using media such as acrylic, collage, fresco, ink drawing (Pen and Ink), Mixed-Media/Multi-Media and oil.
One of his wall paintings in New York City is the ten-story mural Venus. It is located on the south side of Bayview Correctional Facility at 19th Street and the West Side Highway.
Knox Martin's work is included in the collections of Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Art Students League of New York, Brooklyn Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, National Arts Club, New York University, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, New York State Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Baltimore Museum of Art, Berkeley Art Museum, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Denver Art Museum, Heckscher Museum of Art, Ithaca Museum, Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, Lowe Art Museum, Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, Springfield Art Museum, Toledo Museum of Art, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Wellesley College, William Benton Museum of Art, Israel Museum and the Bibliothèque Nationale.
In 2002 Knox Martin was named to the National Academy of Design.
Knox Martin gives Master Classes at the Art Students League of New York. He taught at Yale Graduate School of Art, first as visiting critic in art, and then as Professor of Art. The Coolombiacool Foundation

The COOLOMBIACOOL foundation is a non-profit entity, that was consolidated on Dec. 12, 2007, as a cultural, recreational and charitable foundation of a permanent nature. The Foundation was born with a desire of re-evaluation the close involvement of the social issues with a lack of culture and sensitivity, its social objective being the development of activities tending to promote, sponsor and motivate musical, artistic, tourist and ecologic culture in the community in general and in its related manifestations.

The Foundation orients its cultural and social interests towards the knowledge, diffusion, and support for artistic talents in all their expressions in the Colombian nation beginning from their historical and cultural roots and their fusion with other cultures. Likewise, the philosophy of the COOLOMBIACOOL foundation is based on its power of call to participate in an active way in support campaigns to other entities that work for the culture, the development of creativity, arts in all their expressions, and those, by their social content focused on native communities, children, population affected by the violence, everyone who would like to actively take part in its cultural programs aimed at transmitting an artistic breath and building such groups.

The Foundation will develop strategies for resource procuring for training those communities in productive projects in ECO direction, schedule training courses, publicity campaigns, strategies for marketing and commerce of the products created by these groups.
